Pipercross Performance Intake System – Intake System for VAG 2.0 TFSI Engines
Take your vehicle’s performance to the next level with the Pipercross Performance Induction System. This precisely engineered system is vehicle-specific and represents the ideal solution for maximizing performance, efficiency, and intake sound.
Pipercross VAG 2.0 TFSI Intake System
The Pipercross intake system has been designed and developed to fully replace the factory airbox and integrated intake ducting on VAG group vehicles equipped with the 2.0 TFSI (EA113) engine.
Key Features
- Large heat shield utilizing the original cold air feed
- Pipercross cone filter made from multi-layer foam with high filtration efficiency
- Single-piece mandrel-bent aluminium intake pipe
- Heavy-duty silicone hoses with a smooth internal surface
- Developed using state-of-the-art 3D scanning and CAD technologies
- Dyno-proven gains of +15 WHP and +21 Nm
Evaluation of the OEM Intake System
The original intake system of the VAG 2.0 TFSI engine (2003–2013) was well designed for its time and provided sufficient performance for stock ECU calibration. However, once the engine is remapped or turbocharger boost pressure is increased, the factory intake becomes a restriction, limiting airflow and reducing potential power.
Pipercross engineers analyzed the OEM system and identified three areas with the greatest potential for improvement:
- the type and surface area of the filter media,
- the airbox design,
- the integrated intake ducting.
The solution was a complete redesign of the system, replacing the factory airbox and ducting with a lightweight aluminium heat shield and intake pipe. This design retains the original cold air feed while effectively isolating the filter from engine bay heat. Every component was optimized to make maximum use of the available space in the engine bay without compromising durability or component clearances.
Cone Air Filter
At the heart of the system is a Pipercross cone air filter, hand-made in the UK from proven multi-layer foam material. This filter provides:
- maximum airflow,
- excellent filtration efficiency,
- long service life with the ability to be cleaned and reused.
Thanks to its cone shape, the filtration surface area is increased by 10.14% compared to a conventional panel filter. The filter features an outer diameter of 180 mm and an aluminium outlet neck with a diameter of 90 mm. This combination delivers an ideal balance between airflow and filtration efficiency, while providing sufficient headroom for further engine performance upgrades.
Heat Shield
The Pipercross heat shield was designed to:
- maximize the volume protected from engine bay heat,
- utilize the original cold air feed,
- prevent the ingestion of hot air from the engine.
The four-sided construction made from 1.5 mm aluminium completely isolates the filter from surrounding heat. The lower section of the shield is shaped to optimally direct airflow from the factory intake channel evenly across the entire filter surface.
Each heat shield is CNC laser-cut, powder-coated for corrosion resistance, and fitted with EPDM sealing edges to prevent contact with other engine components. This eliminates vibrations and ensures long-term durability.
Aluminium Intake Pipe (Hard Pipe)
The single-piece aluminium intake pipe has a diameter of 90 mm and is mandrel-bent with optimized radii to maintain a constant cross-section along its entire length. At the end of the pipe, a reducer to 70 mm is used for connection to the factory turbo inlet hose.
Additional technical features include:
- CNC-machined MAF sensor mount positioned identically to the OEM system to ensure accurate measurement.
- An integrated mounting point with an anti-vibration rubber isolator to prevent material fatigue.
- Powder-coated surface finish for durability and visual appeal.
Detailed Engineering Solutions
- Silicone hoses: five-ply construction with a smooth internal surface ensures stable airflow without turbulence.
- Support for K03 and K04 turbochargers: the kit includes CNC-machined blanks and couplers depending on engine configuration.
- Mounts and hardware: CNC laser-cut steel brackets, stainless steel bolts, and fasteners resistant to corrosion and heat.
Every detail has been designed to ensure the system withstands long-term exposure to heat, vibration, moisture, and mechanical stress in the engine bay.
Development and Testing
All Pipercross products are developed in-house using the latest technologies:
- 3D scanning and CAD modelling,
- CFD airflow simulations,
- 3D-printed prototypes,
- real-world testing on engine dynamometers and airflow test rigs.
The 2.0 TFSI intake system went through multiple development iterations to achieve:
- the largest possible filter size,
- an optimally sized heat shield,
- the maximum possible intake pipe diameter,
- while maintaining all manufacturing tolerances and engine bay clearances.
Airflow Test Results
Airflow capacity of both the OEM intake and the Pipercross system was measured on the Pipercross test rig.
| System | Maximum airflow (CFM) |
Improvement |
| OEM | 481 CFM | — |
| Pipercross | 746 CFM |
+43 % |
The new system therefore demonstrates a 146% reduction in airflow restriction and a significant improvement in overall airflow capacity.
Dyno Test Results
Tested on a 2009 VW Golf GTI (2.0 TFSI, Stage 1).
Conducted on an independent Dynapac 4WD dynamometer under controlled conditions (temperature and airflow).
Results:
- +15 WHP (wheel horsepower)
- +21 Nm of torque
- Improved throttle response
- Increased power at higher RPM
- Stronger pull in the 3600–5200 RPM range
Performance gains were achieved across the entire rev range, with the most noticeable improvements in the mid to upper RPM band, significantly enhancing vehicle dynamics and driving experience.
